I will race to the
top of the mountain to catch
the sun rise with you.
I will race to the
top of the mountain to catch
the sun rise with you.
you are a horse running alone
and he tries to tame you
compares you to an impossible highway
to a burning house
says you are blinding him
that he could never leave you
forget you
want anything but you
you dizzy him, you are unbearable
every woman before or after you
is doused in your name
you fill his mouth
his teeth ache with memory of taste
his body just a long shadow seeking yours
but you are always too intense
frightening in the way you want him
unashamed and sacrificial
he tells you that no man can live up to the one who
lives in your head
and you tried to change didn't you?
closed your mouth more
tried to be softer
prettier
less volatile, less awake
but even when sleeping you could feel
him travelling away from you in his dreams
so what did you want to do love
split his head open?
you can't make homes out of human beings
someone should have already told you that
and if he wants to leave
then let him leave
you are terrifying
and strange and beautiful
something not everyone knows how to love.
-Warsan Shire
All things good are good: poetry...patience...a ripe tomato on the vine...a bat in flight...the new moon..me in your arms...things like that
-from Everything Good is Simple by Nikki Giovanni
I love you because
I don't know how not to.
You make me sick
and you heal my body
all in
the same breath.
I used to think if I kept the fridge full you'd stay a few days longer
or at least until the sunrise.
The way to a man's heart is through his stomach
so they say...and your appetite was pretty big.
but now the fridge is empty
and so is my bed.
what have you become
all for love
all for one
all for nothing
because your daddy didn't love you
and that boy left you swollen and aching
your mouth used to bring sunshine
and your eyes told funny stories
but now I don't recognize you
when did you lose yourself
all for love
all for one
all for nothing.
from the beginning
every freckle
every flaw
stared me in the face.
perfection.
love.
i run the water to fade out the noise.
i pour a top full of bleach and I begin scrubbing.
harder.
breathing in the fumes.
i switch brushes
hoping this time it will be different
wiped clean.
my hands begin to ache
and the stains are still there
where they've always been.
I'm so tired
my eyes are starting to burn
but I keep them open
for one more glance at you.
