When it Storms

I could hear the storm rolling through so me and my brother ran inside the house.
"Sit down and be quiet." Granny used to say. "The Lord is doing his work."
The wind whipped against the window
the thunder clapped
and rolled
and sheets of rain fell.
Lightning lit up the sky
as I peeped from under my blanket.
He makes a lot of noise,
I thought to myself.
I guess He doesn't like doing the dishes either.

Summer ready

As it gets warmer, the shades of nail polish get brighter and warmer as well. There's something about the warmer months that just makes us ladies want to show off our nails and toes. I love changing colors so fast that I've been building my own nail polish collection. Here's my shade for the week, Essie's Bachelorette Bash. This shade of pink can be worn through all seasons. What color are you wearing this week?

Boozy Brunches and Poetry Readings

It's Monday again and I am soo tired. Last week was full of concerts and happy hours with family and friends.

Me and my roommate went to see Solange's show last Tuesday. She is such a fun performer and a great dancer!

I finally got to hang out with one of my cousins that I didn't even know existed and come to find out he lives on the next street! So from now on I hope to try to build closer connections with family on my father's side, and hopefully a family reunion this summer!

I didn't have set plans this past weekend but it still turned out to be great! Me and my friends found a fun hole in the wall with cheap drinks and a great DJ. Saturday we spent the afternoon with one of my favorite writers, Nikki Giovanni!  She told us some great stories and she kept us laughing. She read us a few of her poems and signed our books. I'll never forget meeting such an incredible woman! Later we had drinks and dinner at one of our favorite spots, Ben's. Sunday we had a boozy brunch at a really cute restaurant called Nage. The food was amazingly good and the bottomless mimosas came in a few different flavors. I'm still recovering this morning. Lol!

How was your weekend?

Travel Often

This past weekend I visited my soror Jenerra in Miami and we had a blast! It was great to get away for a mini vacation and escape to much warmer weather. DC weather is a little bipolar at the moment. After dealing with a flight delay and cancellation, I was so happy to finally arrive in Miami. Friday, we went to the beach and baked in the sun and we went to a rooftop happy hour at the Epic Hotel with an amazing view of the city. The next day we went to a boozy brunch at South Street. Try the Cousin Francis tea and the chicken apple sausage and grits. Nom Nom. So good. Then a thunderstorm hit! So we waited until the rain stopped and chilled at the beach again. Saturday night we went to an art walk and food truck festival for more great food and amazing art work. We ended the night with hookah by the water.  Travel often and enjoy every last bite.

Lean In

I finished reading Lean In by Sheryl Sandberg (COO of Facebook) last week on the flight to Miami. This is such a great book! I would recommend this for any woman looking for inspiration and encouragement on how to move up to higher-level leadership roles in the workplace. No matter your industry or what your goals may be; this is the book for you. Women have achieved a lot but we have so much further to go. We have a lot of fear that we may not be good enough compared to our male counterparts, and we stop our own growth and success. We must lean in and reach higher and support our sisters along the way.  Just think: What would you do if you weren't afraid?
