Soul from Down Under

Monday, Hiatus Kaiyote came all the way from Melbourne, Australia to DC and rocked our souls for the night at Liv. The band was awesome, I've been listening to their debut album here. They also had a great opening act: Jennah Bell from Oakland, CA. Jennah mesmerized the crowd with her beautiful voice. Check out her EP here. These are definitely artists that you should support if you love good soul music. Spread the love.

Girls Rule the World

I was reading an interesting article the other day my friend posted called The Tyranny of the Queen Bee. To sum it up, it said that once women reach higher levels of power in the workplace, they tend to compete with female subordinates instead of acting as mentors. The information didn't surprise me because it is very true. I remember when I first started looking for a job and I turned to some women who I thought were great professional role models, that didn't seem to want to put much effort into helping me or putting in a good word for me. But I also had other women that were very happy to help and encourage me during that process. I've also heard stories from friends and have watched movies where the woman in charge just didn't want anyone jeopardizing her power, so she did anything she could to make female subordinates look bad or the bare minimum to help them succeed. Why is this? Well it's already difficult for women to get ahead in male-dominated industries, so some women feel they need to protect what's theirs, as they should. Women work 10 times harder to get to the top. However, there should be more solidarity among women in the workforce, because this will open up more opportunities for women to be successful in every field. Drexler (2013) states, "The very women who have complained for decades about unequal treatment now perpetuate many of the same problems by turning on their own." Fortunately, I am in a position with a female boss that is very supportive. Once I excel to a leadership role I hope to be able to inspire, encourage, and develop as many women as I can so that they can reach their professional goals. Women really have to let go of this "mean girl" mentality, and nurture relationships with other professional women. When we work together we can all be successful.

The Next Phase

A few days ago I completed my requirements for my MBA. Whew! Now what? LOL Lots of planning will  be taking place since I have all this free time now. I'm excited to see what God has in store for me during this next phase of my life. I want to create a financial plan that will allow me to pay off debt and still be able to have income leftover to travel and do the things that I want to do. I believe that if you have the money you shouldn't spend it all on bills. You only have one life so you have to live the life you want to live. Don't go overboard, we all still have responsibilities! As far as my career, I'm still brainstorming. Most people expect me to be working in the corporate world, and making six figures. That wasn't my plan at all...well I'll gladly take the six figures part! But I'm interested in entrepreneurship and building economically viable communities. We all aren't fortunate enough to have our dream jobs and have our purpose fall right into our laps, but my goal is to find or CREATE a position that will allow me to help as many people as I can. So i'll continue working on my business plan and networking until I find a way to do that. So for now I'll do a bit more volunteering, praying, and soul searching, writing down all of my ideas, and i'll come back with the results. :)

Hair Chronicles

My dad hates my hair in its natural kinky, coily state so I sent him this pic when I got it trimmed and straightened it for the first time in months. He was so happy! What he doesn't know is that this style won't last long. LOL I love the versatility of my hair. It's healthy and it's an expression of who I am! I am thinking about adding color next. So he just has to get used to it. :) xoxo

Sometimes there just are not words that do justice to the way you love something, someone. Sometimes it’s beyond letters, beyond adjectives, beyond syntax or elaborate description. It just is, as all things just are when they find you when you were never even looking.
